21 August to 31 August 2004

Day 1
Saturday 21

07.00hrs main group assembles in Dover for the 08.15 hrs ferry to Dunkerque aboard one of the new Norfolk Line ships.

Once on board the ferry we will have time to partake of a good breakfast so saving time on the 'other side'.

Depart Dunkerque at about 11.30hrs (French time) for the drive to our overnight hotel Castel les Sorbiers- half board.

We leave the port of Dunkerque and take the fast autoroute ( a drive of about 90 miles) to the Saint Ghislain service area where we can fill up the cars and get a coffee before going 'cross country'.

We then head towards Les Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure - reservoirs created to supply water for the River Sambre and the Charleroi Canal - we shall make a quick stop here. The scheme is actually made up of three reservoirs with a hydro electric power plant and as there has been a greater demand than expected the larger of the lakes has to be refilled every night by turbo-pumps.

We shall then drive on to Couvin with its hill top castle - destroyed by Louis XIV in 1672.

Next we head for the French border again and the River Meuse which we follow to Givet then crossing back into Belgium we come to Heer-sur-Meuse and our overnight stop in the Castel les Sorbiers hotel on the banks of the River.

Today's mileage = Approximately 166 from Dunkerque.
