Day 9
Sunday 29

Today we drive to Hameln or to you and me Hamelin of Pied Piper fame.

Leaving the hotel at 09.30 hours we start our homeward journey BUT before we get back to Blighty there is still much to do and see.

We shall pause in the Sanssouci Park in Potsdam for an hour to take in the splendour of the place.

After Potsdam we take the fast Autobahn stopping at the old East/West German Border crossing point of Helmstedt for our lunch and for a chance to reflect on the way things were not so long ago.

We should arrive in Hamelin with time to look around the Old Town before visiting the Ratcatcher's House for dinner.

And ere three shrill notes the pipe uttered,
You heard as if an army muttered;
And the muttering grew to a grumbling;
And the grumbling grew to a mighty rumbling;
And out of the houses the rats came tumbling:
Great rats, small rats, lean rats, brawny rats,
Brown rats, black rats, grey rats, tawny rats,
Grave old plodders, gay young friskers,
Fathers, mothers, uncles, cousins,
Cocking tails and pricking whiskers,
Families by tens and dozens,
Brothers, sisters, husbands, wives --
Followed the Piper for their lives.
From street to street he piped, advancing,
And step for step, they followed, dancing,
Until they came to the River Weser
Wherein all plunged and perished

Tonight we shall 'dine out' at the Rattenfängerhaus ( The Rat Catcher's House) where we shall eat the local delicacies of Flambierte Rattenschwänze (Flame Grilled Rats Tails) and wash it down with a "rat-killer" (a 50% proof liqueur) - this is included in the half board price as shown in the costing sheet.
